Quicksilver by Callie Hart: A Book Review

2–3 minutes

““Because she is moonlight. The mist that shrouds the mountains. The bite of electricity in the air before a storm. The smoke that rolls across a battlefield before the killing starts. You have no idea what she is. What she could be. You should call her Majesty.” ― Quicksilver

Quicksilver follows Saeris Fane as she is swept into a Fae world at war with Vampires, discovering her own powers as an alchemist along the way. She meets Death himself, the Kingfisher, and is asked to achieve the unachievable in order to get home to her brother. As Saeris uncovers herself, she has to ask herself: does she really want to return home?

What did the book do well?
World building. The human world and the Fae world come to life and add a depth of understanding about why the characters are the way they are.

What are your nitpicks?
Callie Hart went hard with names, and they can get really convoluted. There is a pronunciation key in the front, but it is not comprehensive, and somehow, it just adds to the confusion. You’ll have to add to it if you are bad at proper nouns, like moi.

What was the Candy Mountain (highlight) of the book?
There were two: First, Onyx the fox. He is a little gem who adds humanity to the storyline.

Second, there is a sex scene that includes a bite and it is…*throws panties.

What was the dungeon (worst part) of the book?
The first few chapters – they set the book up, but damn were they dark. We don’t stay in that world long though! Also, there are rations of pee water. Ew.

Who would you cast as the main characters for a Quicksilver movie?
Saeris: Marie Avgeropoulos
Kingfisher: Michele Morrone

What is a better title for the book?
I absolutely would have called it: Smoke and Alchemy

Who would you Unalive, F*ck, Marry?
Unalive: Malcom (low hanging fruit there)
F*ck: Lorreth
Marry: Ren

Disagree? Read it and play. Let me know who you would UFM.

Final Recommendation:

Quicksilver was one of the best books I have read all year. The pacing, the plot, and the dialogue were of particular note. I really enjoyed how Saeris’ character developed. One of my big pet peeves is behavior that does not make sense based on what we know of a character. Hart did a great job uncovering Saeris’ past to help us understand her choices and growth. Also, I am a sucker for strong Fae men with dark hair and features. Kingfisher was *chef’s kiss.

Highly recommend.
